The Menu – Food For Thought?

This new Netflix film has taken the world by storm and has been nominated for multiple golden globes as well as a handful of other awards.

The film, penned by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss, has been known for its thrilling scenes and absurd dishes with many people finding the the themes of extreme privilege and wealth intriguing and very cleaver.

However, I have a different opinion. When watching the film, even though you understand from the start that only the wealthy can afford to go to the restaurant, I found that it was confusing why all of this was happening to these people until it was explained. Moreover there were some characters, like the locals to the restaurant, that threw me out of the loop because why would they be punished.

There were many points in this film where I was left confused. A good example of this is that at one point some characters are told to run. What I didn’t understand was why they were told to run when everyone knew they wouldn’t “escape”. Moreover, the idea of the main character being different wasn’t focussed on enough with only a few moments here and there that highlighted that she was. Apart from them few moments, Margot (the main character) was treated the exact same as the other diners.

Overall, I don’t believe that there was a real plot line in this film and after the film I was left wanting more. I think this came from the film not being set up well enough to feel a sense of accomplishment when Margot finds a loophole as a strong relationship wasn’t built up with the character.
